George Redmayne is project manager of every step counts, a two year project running in Southwark, Blackburn with Darwen and Bristol, which works with the most inactive in those communities to help them become more active through walking. It is based on the concept of “taking walking to people” rather than “taking people on walks” and aims to make walking part of people’s everyday life, and thereby contribute to alleviating isolation, improving mental well-being and promoting physical activity. Every step counts is a Ramblers project funded by the Big Lottery Fund through the Active Travel Consortium of leading walking, cycling and health organisations, and supported by local councils, Walking for Health schemes and Macmillan Cancer Support. After 31st March 2015 the intention is that the outreach approach piloted and refined through the life of this project will be integrated into the Walking for Health programme as an add-on to be delivered long-term by Walking for Health staff and volunteers.
